ABOUT

BPH Global Limited

We are aiming to establish a dynamic presence in Indonesia’s rapidly expanding raw seaweed export market. Leveraging Indonesia’s status as one of the world’s foremost seaweed producers, we are focusing on the sustainable sourcing, processing, and exporting of high-quality seaweed. Our primary focus is on Eucheuma (for carrageenan production), Gracilaria (for agar production), and Ulva (for food and animal feed additives). With a strategic focus on the lucrative international markets of Asia, Europe, and North America, we are aspiring to become a leading player in this high-demand, eco-conscious industry.

Market Opportunity

1. Export Volume

  • Total Export: Indonesia is one of the largest seaweed producers and exporters globally. In 2022, Indonesia produced around 11 million tons of seaweed.
  • Export Quantity: The country exports around 200,000 to 300,000 tons of dried seaweed annually, making it one of the top exporters in the world.

2. Export Value

  • Revenue: Seaweed exports have contributed significantly to Indonesia’s marine-based economy. In 2022, Indonesia’s seaweed export value was approximately USD 300-350 million.
  • Growth: The export value has seen consistent growth in recent years, with demand from both traditional and emerging markets increasing. Over the past five years, the seaweed export value has grown by an average of 5-7% annually.

3. Export Destinations

Indonesia’s top markets for seaweed exports include:

  • China: Accounts for 50-60% of Indonesia’s seaweed exports, primarily for carrageenan production.
  • South Korea: Around 10-15% of Indonesia’s seaweed exports go to South Korea, largely for food use.
  • Japan, USA, and Europe: These regions account for 20-25% of exports, with a focus on processed seaweed products like agar and carrageenan.

4. Types of Seaweed Exported

  • Red Seaweed (Kappaphycus alvarezii and Eucheuma denticulatum): The majority of Indonesia’s seaweed exports are in the form of dried red seaweed used for carrageenan production.
  • Gracilaria: This seaweed species is used for agar production and constitutes a smaller but significant portion of exports.

Indonesia, with its vast coastal resources and favorable farming conditions, is perfectly positioned to supply this growing demand. However, despite being a leading producer, much of the raw seaweed is exported without value addition. This presents a strategic opportunity to enter the market and develop a differentiated business model.

Business Model

Our business model will focus on sourcing raw seaweed directly from local farmers in key seaweed-producing regions such as South Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, and Java. We will establish strong relationships with cooperatives and individual farmers to ensure a consistent supply of high-quality raw material. By providing technical support and fair trade pricing, we will secure long-term partnerships and help enhance the livelihoods of local communities.

Our operations will include:

Sourcing

Direct procurement of raw seaweed from trusted local farmers.

Processing

Initial cleaning and drying to meet export standards. We will invest in local processing facilities to improve quality control and add value to the product.

Exporting

Establishing logistics channels for exporting raw seaweed to markets in China, South Korea, Japan, the United States, and Europe.
